Style: Pale Lager
Milano, Italy

Birra Moretti, Stylish Italian Beer Birra Moretti is an Italian brewing company, founded in Udine in 1859 by Luigi Moretti. In 1996 the company was acquired by Heineken International. The brewing plant in Udine was sold to the newly formed Birra Castello S.p.A.; Moretti and is now a brand of Heineken.

Birra Moretti is a 4.6% abv pale beer produced using a traditional process that has remained almost unchanged since 1859. It is a low fermented beer that has a golden colour, the tone of which is given by the quality of malt used.

Review: Bottle of Birra Moretti European Pale Lager, 4.60% ABV

A respectable European pale lager that comes in a lovely looking bottle. The “Moretti” logo, of a traditional Italian countryman about to enjoy a big frothing glass of beer, stands out indicating that this beer is stylish and eager to be enjoyed.

Appearance is a pale, straw yellow colour that when poured produces a nice thick white head with good retention and with decent lacing. A fine-looking clear lager.

Birra Moretti

The aroma has a rustic smell of lightly toasted barley, and some grassy hops, which gave a very pleasant and balanced smell.

The taste was crisp and clean. having a light honey and mild malt flavour with a fair hop bitter aftertaste at the end. This beer is easy to drink, a balanced and smooth taste that goes down well.

Moretti is a good lager that goes especially well with Italian food (naturally!).

Kirin Ichiban, Beer at its Purest

Kirin Ichiban, Beer at its Purest

Kirin Ichiban

Brewed by Kirin Brewery Company
Style: Pale Lager
Tokyo, Japan

Kirin Ichiban, Beer at its Purest “Ichiban” means Number One, and is brewed by the Kirin Brewery Company in Tokyo, Japan.
Kirin sells two of the most popular beers in Japan: Kirin Lager, the country’s oldest beer brand; and Ichiban Shibori.

Since its introduction in 1990, Kirin Ichiban has become one of Japan’s most acclaimed and best selling beers, and a favorite of beer lovers all across North America and Europe

Kirin Ichiban is considered one of the purest beers in the world. The beer is made with a single wort (or first press) brewing process which extracts only the purest, most flavorful portion of the finest ingredients. When combined with its new all malt formula, the result is a distinctively smooth, clean, and full-bodied beer—yet with none of the bitter aftertaste one would expect from a beer with this much flavor.

Review: Can of Kirin Ichiban Pale Lager, 5% ABV

Kirin Ichiban, my first time having a Japanese beer, was impressive on its first showing. In general it was pretty nice and quite drinkable

On pouring, the appearance was of a pale yellow colour with a very big creamy head that lingers for some time, and leaves a bit of lacing on the glass. Had a nice look to it.

Kirin Ichiban, Beer at its Purest Aroma: A pleasant sweet smell of a light grain and malt aroma.

A nice light beer to drink and went down easy enough. The taste had some initial sweetness followed by a very enjoyable bitter aftertaste of hops, kind of creamy. Tastes of hay, wheat, and light floral hops were found.

A good clean, crisp beer, smooth, I liked it. Recommended for someone who is looking for a nice light beer to relax with.

In 2001 the company renamed itself as the Mythos Brewery Ltd., as Mythos had become its primary product. The name Mythos means ‘myth’ in Greek.

Mythos beer is the only Greek beer brand that is exported to approximately thirty or more countries worldwide, thus making it the world’s most famous Hellenic Beer.

The beer itself is a light straw-coloured, lager beer with an alcohol content of 4.7%.

Review: Can of Mythos pale lager 4.7% ABV

Mythos beer The most famous Hellenic beer in the worldAnother surprise, never thought I would be loving a Greek beer, but this is a good, smooth and refreshingly tasty beer.

The appearance is good, and I am getting a nice clear pale yellow beer with a good head developing, but it does dissipate quickly, found good lacing though.

No clear smell was found, maybe slightly sweet and a small hint of cooked corn and grassy hops.

Taste was of sweet malts, no bitterness, was fairly smooth to drink, and a teeny bit strong too. I liked it. Recommended.

Nomade The up and coming player in the Chilean beer market

Nomade Beer, An Up and Coming Player

Nomade Scotch and Blonde Ale

http://www.cervezanomade.cl/

Brewed by Cerveza Artesanal Nomade
Style: Scotch Ale/Golden Ale/Blond Ale
Santiago, Chile

Nomade The up and coming player in the Chilean beer marketA small brewery with a big heart, exploring beer styles that are not necessarily common in South America; a Scotch ale anyone? Nevertheless, the brewery is increasing its popularity amongst the beer drinking public of Chile, and Nomade won gold, silver and bronze in various beer events in the “Beers of America Copa” in 2012.  Make no mistake about it, Nomade is an up and coming player in the Chilean beer market.

Review: Bottle of Nomade Scotch Ale, 6.7%ABV

Nomade Scotch Ale, in a Scottish style, is a very pleasant beer made with a fine selection of traditional and smoked malts.

On pouring, a dark brown color appeared with a good head that stayed well and leaving a good amount of lacing as you would expect from a good ale.

The aroma was a bit fruity and malty.

The taste was a sweet malty flavour with notes of grapes and smoked malts.A small bitter aftertaste that wasn’t overwhelming. It was interesting that it took a short while for the alcohol to kick in, which it did by the end. Found it quite a strong drink to have, and can imagine the fun to be had after a few of these tough boys!

Nomade The up and coming player in the Chilean beer marketReview: Bottle of Nomade Blonde Ale, 4.5%ABV

Next up for the Nomade range was to try one of their very tasty Blonde Ales

On pour there was quite a large head that settled very nicely with a small amount of lacing The colour was of a darkish golden tint.

The aroma was a nice faint sweetly smell of yeast and some fruit, particular orange. Was a light smell but very pleasant on the nose.

The ale had a very balanced taste that included grains, yeast, citrus and fruit flavours. Quite an interesting mix for an ale but it was damn easy to drink and overall a very enjoyable ale experience. Recommended.

Mongozo, The Exotic Beer

Mongozo, The Exotic Beer

Mongozo

http://www.mongozo.com/en

Brewed by Brouwerij Huyghe for the Dutch company Mongozo B.V.
Netherlands
Style: exotic fruit beer
Melle, Belgium

Mongozo is an exotic fruit beer which is a one of a kind. It was the first Fair Trade Lager in the world as all the fruit used in the production of this beer is exclusively sourced from Fair Trade suppliers. There are five exotic flavours available: Mango, Banana, Coconut, Quinua and Palmnut.

Although Mongozois a Dutch company, the beer is actually brewed in the traditional way across the border in the Huyghe Brewery in Melle, Belgium. I wasn’t sure to have it down as a Dutch or Belgian, or even as an African beer, but I went with it as a Dutch beer as Mongozo is a Dutch company, Simples.

The word Mongozo means “cheers” in the language of the Chokwe people of Africa.
The story behind the beer is that Henrique Kabia came to the Netherlands from Angola as a refugee in 1993. He brought with him his grandmother’s beer recipe that was so popular in his home. This recipe served as the basis for the brewing Mongozo Palmnut. In 1998, Henrique Kabia and, his business partner, Jan Fleurkens decided to put the beer on the Dutch market in 1999 launching Mongozo Palmnut.

There are now five exotic flavours available: Mango, Banana, Coconut, Quinua and Palmnut.

Review: Bottle of Mongozo Mango Flavoured Fruit Beer, 3.6%ABV

I tried the mango flavoured Mongozo fruit beer.

“The Exotic Beer” is a lovely sweet drink and a free trade product. So you know by drinking lots of it you are doing your little bit to help people in the less developed world. Building up your karma bank no end.

Mongozo, The Exotic BeerOn pour there is a dark hazy golden colour with a nice enough head and a bit of lacing.

As you would except there is a very strong ripe mango smell throughout which is very refreshing.

The taste is, naturally, of a very sweet fresh mango flavour. It is strong tasting with some lingering malty aftertaste. This is a good beer for the summer time, nice on a hot day.
