France V Nigeria Fifa World Cup 2014

After match synopsis in red!!

Top bets on today’s game: France V Nigeria

day 13 n 14 029Nigeria showed in the last game that they will be no easy pushovers for France today. They are a team that scores goals, are physically imposing and have a top class goal keeper at the ready. I think France can still get through but maybe it might take till extra time to knock out a strong Nigeria team.

2-2 17/1
Benzema 10/11 a/t scorer
Giroud a/t scorer 13/10

All odds with PP

Really unlucky with Benzema as he had too good strikes that were both just about cleared away in time, otherwise not great tipping, damn!

france v argentina

Who is set to win the battle of the beers? Luckily for Nigeria they topped their beer Group F, so its Quilmes of Argentina who get to take on Kronenbourg, who came first in their beer Group E, so it is Kronenbourg V Quilmes. Kronenbourg V Quilmes: 0-1 to Quilmes, who just shaded it in a very tight contest between two beers who match each other very well. Kronenbourg is a nicer looking beer, with an appearance that is hard to beat, a lovely clear amber colour, with a nice frothy white head. Quilmes, although decent, cant beat the French beer here. Both beers smelt sweet. Quilmes probably more obvious than Kronenbourg, with a malty aroma. For taste which is, of course, the most important factor, Quilmes just edged it. Kronenbourg has a lot of very interesting and complex flavouring going on: from fruit, sweet caramel malts, honey, to a sweet malt taste at the start followed up with a mild hop bitterness. All in all a good variety of flavours. Quilmes had also an interesting mix. There’s a little corn and grain sweetness to open it up, a kind of sickly sweet. It does eventually settle down into a nice decent drink and there is a bitter aftertaste which grows on you. It’s this aftertaste that gets the victory for Quilmes, a more lingering memory.

PreGame:

Didier_DeschampsFrance: Their last game ended in a rather dour nil nil stalemate with Ecuador exiting the tournament rather meekly and France getting to top the group. Didier Deschamps had made six changes in the the starting line-up of that game, and these new players didnt take their chance to impress. France were laboured throughout this game, not really stringing too many passes or moves together. They looked a bit disappointing when considering their two previous performances. But they got through, and that’s the important thing. .

There was chances in that game for both teams. The Ecuadorian goalkeeper Domínguez had to be alert to push a Pogba header just over the bar while at the other end Enner Valencia, like a gazelle, out jumped everyone in the French defence drawing a good save from a header by Hugo Lloris. Benzema had a few chances, Pogba had a few more, and, probably, for Ecuador they should have scored when Cristhian Noboa wasted a glorious opportunity from a 3v2 break that led to nothing.

France play Nigeria today in what will be a tough enough game. Nigeria wont be as easy a pushover as anything France have played so far. They are a team that attacks with pace, are very physical, and have a well drilled system in place. France will have to improve a lot from the Ecuadorian performance if they want to get to the last eight.

Nigeria defied all expectations to reach this stage, considering their rather insipid first game performance,. A big “thank you” must also go out to Bosnia who in beating Iran, helped Nigeria into the last eight, despite the Super Eagles losing to Argentina, 3-2.

Argentina and Nigeria played out a five goal thriller that saw both Messi and Musa score twice, and also seen both teams qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup. What Messi did Musa followed. Two goals, two great goals, certainly announced Musa’s arrival onto the world stage. It will be very interesting to see his performance today, as he played in the dour game with Iran and had an hour against Bosnia and showed very little in both games. So what player will turn up today?

France 2 Nigeria 0 Fifa World Cup 2014Although Nigeria only needed a draw against Argentina to be assured of qualification, they still pressed up the pitch and took on the might of Messi and co. The Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi had got his tactics spot on. His team defended in numbers, broke with pace when needed and basically neutered Argentina. The Argentine’s found it very difficult to get past the very physical Nigerian defence with Onazi particularly solid at the back. Ambrose was also another player I thought played well, breaking from defence, and creating many good attacking opportunities on the wing. And if you do beat that defence then you also have to score something exceptional to get past the might of Vincent Enyeama in goals. He has had an excellent World Cup so far, a very good shot stopper, strong with crosses, and commanding his back line with efficiency. I heard him a few times, clearly shouting to the defenders in front of him, organising and maintaining discipline. Brilliant. Having said all that, Nigeria still let in three goals. But to be fair to them, Messi stepped up for Argentina, scored two brilliant goals, and the third Argentinian goal was a bit unlucky, a goal scored off a knee in a crowded box. So let the French beware, if they do want to get into the last eight, first they have to beat this very solid Nigerian defence and goalkeeper.

But for all the talk, here is one very interesting and rather telling stat that I have seen mention that for all the good play that Nigeria have had in previous World Cups, they still have only won one of their last 11 World Cup matches. Losing games can be a bad habit.

The teams preparations have also been hit by a row over win bonuses, that required the Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, to personally guarantee that the players would eventually be paid some time in the future.  Things like this might affect the players especially when the chips are down.

nigeriaNigeria will be a stern test for France. They are strong at the back and can score on the break, and will be a match for the free scoring French team. This is a game I am looking forward to seeing. Let the battle commence.

France scored twice in the final 11 minutes in Brasilia to beat Nigeria and reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

It all started off so promising for Nigeria, they bossed the early part of this match against France, getting chance after chance and controlling the rhythm of the game. All Nigeria in the first half. France looked bad.

France 2 Nigeria 0 Fifa World Cup 2014Oshaniwa had Valbuena in his pocket, beating him to most of the balls to whip in crosses. Emenike was lively, running from deep, left and right, taking the odd pot shot on goal, and was unlucky to have his well taken strike called of for offside, another few inches and it was fine. Odemwingie also tested Hugo Lloris in the French goal, with a smart strike. Nigeria looked in the driving seat for much of this game. And yet they lost.

Didier Deschamps made a master substitution after about an hour of dour football from his team. He brought on Antoine Griezmann, taking off Giroud who had a poor game. This pushed Benzama into a more central position on the field, where he became more effective.

France 2 Nigeria 0 Fifa World Cup 2014This changed the tempo of the game as France started to take more control of the match and impose their authority on the pitch. Pogba and Benzama had chances well saved by Enyeama, who was increasingly called into action in the Nigerian goals as his team appeared to lose energy and momentum. Then Victor Moses had to clear a Benzema shot off the line after Enyeama partially smothered the force of the shot which went under his body. Not long after Benzema had another shot that flew tantalizingly across the Nigerian penalty box, but luckily for them no one was there too tap it into the empty goals. As France continued to up the ante, Cabaye seen his excellent volley crash against the bar as Enyeama was stranded. The goal was coming.

franceAnd it came after a terrible blunder by the normally so reliable Enyeama, who rushed out for a corner only to completely miss the ball and see Pogba calmly head it into the empty net. France deserved the goal, for all their second half play and the positive introduction of Griezmann by Deschamps, willing to go for the win rather than play it out till extra time. Nigeria seemed to be willing to play for the draw, as they looked clueless in the second half, not willing to expend too much energy and sleepwalk on the pitch. Not good enough considering their first half performance.

To further compound the misery, Yobo diverted a Valbuena’s cross (he had a much better second half!) into his own net after Enyeama made another goalkeeping error. Another African team exit meekly, but at least they got their win bonus’

France now will go on to Germany, in a mouthwatering tie in the last eight, for the right to advance to the last four of the World Cup. What a clash that will be from the two border rivals.

Netherlands V Mexico World Cup 2014

Netherlands V Mexico Fifa World Cup 2014

After match synopsis in red!!

Top bets on today’s game: Netherlands V Mexico

day 7 008Netherlands to play in the heat for the first time might be a factor. Mexico a good attacking team, not great at the back, but they will give it all til the end. Can see this game going all the way, right up to penos.

Game to be decided by peno’s 9/2
                 Rafael Marquez a/t scorer 10/1
          A Robben a/t scorer 9/5
             R van Persie a/t scorer 7/5
2-2 draw at 13/1

Damn wipe out, couldn’t get a winner here. Robben was unlucky not to get on the score sheet I guess, but really the bets didn’t even get within an asses roar of happening.

VB Bitter V Corona: 3-0 to VB Bitter. Not really a whole lot to say. A strong “bitter” is not going to lose to a light beer, not in my World Cup anyway. Corona is a light beer that has a great refreshing taste, with flavours that are not overwhelming making the beer go down smooth and easily, but I want to actually taste something in my beer and VB does that for me, especially with its famous sour aftertaste.

PreGame:

van_PersieNetherlands: Let us look at some interesting stats before this game today. Arjen Robben has scored eight goals in his last nine appearances for the Dutch, while Robin van Persie, who is back today after serving out his yellow card suspension, has scored 21 goals in his last 25 international appearances. That kind of strike rate will make the Mexican defence worry. They will have to maintain a 100% concentration to keep the two Dutch masters off the score sheet today.

I expect a very exciting end to end tie today, much different to the Netherlands last game against Chile, in what was a very bruising and dour match. I can’t see Mexico as a team that will hold back, and the Dutch are supreme going forward. Should be a cracking game.

But a not of warning to the Dutch, Mexico seem to be improving with every game and wont be as easy a pushover as you might imagine. They have only conceded one goal so far and there forward play is great at easing pressure off their defence. The Dutch should definitely not underestimate the threat that Mexico can pose.

day 12 a 020Mexico can expect to attract more of their fanatical and loud travelling support for today’s game. The Mexican support really is like a 12th man on the pitch, and in the last game it felt that, at times, Mexico were playing this game at home such was the level of support for them from the stands. We will have a great atmosphere in today’s game that’s a definite.

Rafael_MarquezAgainst Croatia, Mexico put on magnificent show with a 3-1 thrashing of the European team. Mexico took the lead when Rafael Marquez jumped up to score from a corner another one of his headed goals. Marquez put his team in front, and was once again brilliant in defence, marshaling his back line well. He also received a yellow card for a very cynical foul that broke up a very promising Croatian attack, taking one for the team. Overall another towering performance from the Mexican captain. Remember this Mexican team have only let in one goal so far at this years World Cup!

Mexico were in the mood for goals, and they came. Guardado chipped in with a lovely strike to put Mexico two up. Super sub, Javier Hernández came on, and sure enough he got his usual trademark goal, nodding in from a far post header after he lost his marker. 3-0 thanks to the “little pea”, and this was beginning to look like a rout of Croatia.

I didn’t think the Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa was so hot against the Croatians, he was a bit flappy, not really as imposing as he was against Brazil. Hopefully that wasn’t his only good game in this World Cup, as his team will need him to be strong, as the Dutch will definitely be testing him. A tough game to call, as Mexico are just as good as the Netherlands when going forward, and with Marquez playing so well in defence, Mexico do have a chance.

Hopefully the Mexican coach Miguel Herrera wont have a heart attack, he is MAD, but a joy to watch on the touchline. Brilliant fun.

17 049The Dutch definitely used their get out of jail card for this game. For the whole of the first half and a bit of the second, Mexico totally dominated them. Mexico must be wondering how they didn’t get through that game. The Netherlands scored two goals in about two minutes late on to qualify for the last eight. Truth be told the Dutch deserved it as Mexico did nothing after they scored and sat back to wait until the final whistle. Well done to the Netherlands and their never give up attitude.

Did Arjen Robben dive in the penalty box? I really dont think it matters that much to be honest. Yes it looked like a dive but Robben was fouled all throughout the game, and deserved about three penalties before this incident. Also a momentary lapse by the super captain Rafael Marquez saw him diving in with a reckless tackle within the penalty box. A silly thing to do especially with Robben ready to fall like a fairy.

day 6 025De Jong, going off after 9 minutes was the start of the problems for the Dutch. His steel was missing at the centre of the Netherlands defence as they struggled to keep out Mexico. It was attack after attack, all Mexico, Layun on one side, Guardado on the other, Peralta and Dos Santos up front dangerous, even Marquez was venturing forward to take on the Dutch. Herrera had a shot that went just inches wide. Salcido with a shot from distance made Cillessen work to pull off a good save. It was Mexico that were totally dominating. Take that total football.

It looked like the Dutch could not cope with the heat. In one awful passage of play the Dutch got a throw  deep in Mexican territory and proceeded to play the ball right back towards their own goalkeeper, shocking from a team that likes to pride itself on its attacking prowess. They were struggling badly in the midday sun.

The goal that was coming, came early second half from Giovanni Dos Santos. In the first half he went close on a couple of occasions unlucky not to score. But he put that right when he piled in a stunning shot from about 25 yards out to give Cillessen no chance to save in the Dutch goals, bottom corner. Great goal, and what his team deserved.

The Mexican goal stirred the Dutch into action and the Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa kept them at bay, pulling off a point blank save to deny an equaliser. Memphis Depay came on and made more of an attacking threat towards the Mexicans, as the Dutch began to come more into the game. Mexico pretty much stopped playing after their goal. Funnily enough it started to look like the Mexicans were beginning to suffer with the heat and not the European team.

day 7 008Arjen Robben started his runs again and was fouled a few times which was passed off by the referee, got a few shots on target, and generally was a nuisance in the box especially for Márquez who had clattered him all game. One one occasion Robben was double tackled by Márquez and Moreno. With tackles and feet flying in it was not one penalty but two! I am not a big fan of Robben but I can totally understand why he dived in the end to get a penalty, as he was getting kicked all game without much protection from the ref, so why not? I just wish he would not make it so obvious and dramatic.

But boy did they leave it late, the 88th minute in fact. Sneijder who did more in the last ten minutes than the whole tournament up to that point started to play some good football and from a loose ball fired an unstoppable low straight shot, that even the great Ochoa could not save, into the corner of the net. Brilliant technique and a great goal.

Netherlands Then there was that penalty that Robben had earned for his team. Marquez sticking out his leg in a half hearted attempt at a tackle and Robben obliging by falling over his outstretched leg. “Thank you for that moment of madness Rafael”.  So it was left to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the late Dutch sub, to keep his nerves steady, score and put Netherlands through to the last eight. You play to the end, and never give up, and that’s why the Netherlands are looking forward to playing Costa Rica while the Mexicans go home ruing the decision not to take the Dutch by the jugular. Best team won, don’t like hard luck stories.

London Pride V Club Colombia: 2-1 to London Pride. Club Colombia, much like its football team, have surprised me in this beer World Cup. I have found it to be a very tasty refreshingly good beer, with a nice looking body that was enjoyable to drink. It pours a lovely clear gold body, with a decent frothy head that lasts and has a smell that is not overpowering but sweet and corn like. The taste was of sweet toasted malts with no real aftertaste. A decent light tasting beer that I would recommend for a good session. But up against a strong ale in London Pride a lager will have to be much more than just nice. It would have to be seriously amazing to beat London Pride’s taste extravaganza! London Pride with its famous amber reddish colour, aromas of some biscuit malts and earthy hops with hints of caramel sweetness, and tastes of light caramel, some earthy hops with a mild bitter aftertaste. Its taste is unique to London Pride, lots of flavours, subtle and complex. I also enjoyed the strong aftertaste, which made you feel in no doubt that you were drinking a strong ale.  A win for the English ale.17 066

PreGame:

day 13 n 14 004Costa Rica: No one would have expected Costa Rica to be still around at this stage of the World Cup, not even the most optimistic of their own fans I am sure. They topped their group, beating two former World Champions without too much difficulty it has to be said, and also getting a draw against the 1966 ex champs, England. In those three encounter they only conceded one goal, and that was from a penalty. But today is different. Different in the fact that in this game against Greece they are slight favourites. How will they cope in a game where they are the team expected to win, and dictate the tempo.

The game against England had a nice warm down feel to it, after the first two hectic adventures versus Italy and Uruguay. It was useful to have such a slow game after their exertions. The result wasn’t of huge importance, if only to note that they kept out England, and bagged another clean sheet. I suspect that the Greek forwards wont trouble them a whole lot today.

In Joel Campbell, Costa Rica have a player who plys his trade in Greece with Olympiakos. He should know at least a bit about some of the defence he will be going up against tonight. Would be a nice story if he scored to knock out Greece, and put his nation into the last eight of the World Cup. Now wouldn’t that be an amazing thing!

Greece amazingly qualified for this stage with a negative goal difference of minus two! The team are ultra-defensive and rarely score more than two goals in a game. They were lucky to get this far to be honest after getting a somewhat fortunate penalty in the 93rd minute against Ivory Coast. Lucky, lucky Greece.

To be fair to the Greeks, against the Ivory Coast, needing the win to advance, they played a little more adventurous with good play down the wings. And with that pressure came the first goal. Samaris scored from a mistake in the IC defence to latch onto a ball and score a nice peach of a strike to put Greece one up. In the second half and against the run of play, Karagounis almost made it 2-0 with a long-range effort that hit the crossbar.

Georgios_SamarasThen deep into injury time they got the goal they needed. Whatever about the ins and outs of the penalty decision, the pressure Samaras was under was immense. Score and you are through to the last 16, miss and you are going home. Wow, that was a PRESSURE shot. Well done to Samaras for slotting it away.

Greece could conceivably win this game. They have done it before, and they certainly wont be a team that panics. They know their system, a system that works for them, and they will stick to it rigidly to the end. This Greek team just never knows when its beaten, and I wont be surprised to see them advance, possibly through a penalty shoot out, which if that was to be the case, then expect it to be a long long night!

Costa Rica are into the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time in their history after beating Greece 5-3 in a penalty shootout in Recife.

day 13 n 14 006I had a feeling this game would go the distance, and boy was I right. Well done to Costa Rica you continue to entertain and surprise. I fully expected Greece to win a penalty shootout, but then I should have expected that under their wily old Costa Rican manager, Jorge Luis Pinto, they had put in a massive effort on the training pitch for penalties. And it showed as all their penalty kicks were expertly put away, calmly and without doubt. Brilliant, considering their legs must have felt like logs they were that tired.

The game started off brightly enough with both teams showing some early promise. Even Greece started to play a bit more attacking football than what we were previously used to seeing. Christodoulopoulos was lively down the wing, and Gonzalez was alert at the back all night, pulling off some magnificent defensive headers to keep the Greeks at bay. But the best chance of the first half arrived when Holebas whipped in a brilliant cross for Salpingidis to volley in a powerful shot. It was excellently saved by Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas. Navas was to be busy all night, performing save after save.

Costa Rica also had a very good goal chalked off for offside, correctly, but it was just inches offside. Unlucky.

The second half was a bit of a snooze fest, but Costa Rica did take the lead early on when Ruiz placed his shot into the corner of the goal giving the Greek goalkeeper no chance. Ruiz looked like he mishit the shot as the angle was all wrong, but a goal is a goal and Costa Rica took the lead.

They could have got a penalty close after, when it looked like the Greek defender Torosidis appeared to handle the ball in the box. At the time it wasn’t clear, but on replays it looked a definite penalty.

The referee further incensed Coast Rica when he gave Duarte his second yellow of the night, to be sent off, for what looked like a very soft foul on Holebas. Two major blunders from the officials here costing Costa Rica dearly as they had to hold out from the 66th minute with ten men in a game where they were stretched to the limits.

greeceThey just about managed to hold on, until in injury time the Greeks did it again. Another late injury time goal from Greece, when Papastathopoulos scored to send the game into extra time. To be fair to Greece their general play in the second half deserved a goal.

Greece used their man advantage outplaying Costa Rica for most of the extra time period. Navas pulled of about 5 or 6 amazing saves, particularly one in the last minute of extra time where he somehow got a touch to superbly tip over the bar Mitroglou’s late shot. Was one of the stand out player performances of the this years World Cup. Navas saved pretty much everything that was thrown at him.

costa ricaHolebas for the Greeks was excellent and tried his hardest to get the win for his team, while for Costa Rica Joel Campbell had run himself into the ground, barely able to walk let alone run. One was wondering if both teams would be able to take 5 good penalties after giving their all in a brilliant period of extra time. The smart money was on Greece to excel in the penalties, mostly because the Costa Ricans looked shattered and also to the fact that Greece are dab hands at spot kicks. The first seven penalties were expertly dispatched with no problems before Gekas stepped up and took his shot, only for Navas to make one final save of the match and push it out. It was then left for Umana to try and score and put Costa Rica through. He looked very confident, and stepped up and made history. Tiny Costa Rica are now in the last eight of the World Cup. AMAZING. But they fully deserved it, playing with heart, skill and determination, they are my team of this years World Cup.

They now face the Netherlands on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals. Will their journey stop there? Probably so, but they have already rewrote the history books, and for that I say Thank you Costa Rica.

Game died with the sending off, ruined the whole contest, but truth be told Germany were well on top even before Muller’s theatrics. Its very hard for Ronaldo to carry that Portugal team all the time, it really must be very physically demanding especially after his long season. Apart from the free kick Ronaldo didn’t have much of a chance of scoring a goal. Bad tipping there, I hold my hand up.

Germany 4 Portugal 0 Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014

PreGame:

Germany: Will they win it this year? I think they have a very strong chance. They have one of the strongest squads in the competition. The world cup games come quick and fast and teams have to rely on their fringe players to get them through to the end. Teams with strong solid squads will do well. Germany fits that bill.

Germany 4 Portugal 0 Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 Manuel Neuer is one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment. Playing regular top class football with Bayern Munich he has shown to be a solid keeper that makes few mistakes and he has the temperate and steadiness to give his back four full confidence to get on with their own game. Would also fancy him for a penalty shoot out. Top class keeper.

if there is a small weakness it is Germany’s defence. It can go without leave, and get disorientated. Philipp Lahm, the captain and one of Germany’s stars is great for bombing forward and getting the ball into the opposition box, but when he is up the field who is behind at the back? Per Mertesacker? Jérôme Boateng? or the rest? Germany have really struggled to get a central defender of the mold of Beckenbauer, someone who exudes confidence on the ball, sweeping out of central defence, controlling his area. Funny that this is a position that Germany is weak on considering the history of German teams and their usually rock solid defence. It remains to be seen if Joachim Löw has solved this problem.

Germany 4 Portugal 0 Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 Midfield is where German are strong. Bastian Schweinsteiger is about as good as you can get for a box to box player, who can ship in for a lot of goals. He has a long season with Munich so it remains to be seen how he will perform with Germany. Mesut Özil is another star of the German midfield, who was a key player from the last World Cup. But this season with Arsenal he has been out of sorts, has struggled and his confidence is very low. Heading into a world cup that’s not good. Thomas Müller is another who has had a mixed season, scoring 13 goals in the league, but under performing in the CL.  But could the German stars be waiting for the world cup to correct their season?

Germany 4 Portugal 0 Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 Up front Miroslav Klose is back and itching to get Ronaldo’s top goal scoring record. He needs two to beat it. At 36 one would wonder if he can get it, but with Löw only bringing the one striker, now that Lukas Podolski seems to be more of an inside forward, he will get chances and game time to beat it. Klose was a world class player, but I am not so sure if he still has the legs and pace to get the goals he needs for the record. He still has a good head for a goal though, literally! It would not be the first time a team has won the world cup with few strikers and a team built around the midfield. France did it in 98, and Argentina did it in 86.

Germany have the ability to steam roll through teams. they are fast going forward and are physically strong. I see them coming first in their group. A tough group but I can’t see Germany losing any of those first round games.

Germany 4 Portugal 0 Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 Portugal and Ronaldo, the two are synonymous in Football. Without their star, Ronaldo, Portugal wouldn’t be half the team, and might struggle to qualify for so many top tournaments. Will this be the year that Ronaldo drags his nation to a world cup final? Well its a definite possibility.

Of course it would be prudish to exclude the rest of the squad in any analysis. Portugal have a decent enough team, strong in defence, creative in midfield, and Ronaldo up front. It is a good team. Going forward that is. They are a team that is great for counter attacking football, but their defence can so easily be caught at the other end.

They have good defenders in Fábio Coentrão, Bruno Alves, Pepe, and André Almeida. Decent enough but as a group they are liable for the odd mishap, and they also tend to give away silly free kicks around their box.

Midfield is also pretty decent. João Moutinho, Raul Meireles, and Manchester United’s Nani, three creative players who love getting forward at all times. its the tracking back that could be the problem here.

In the forward line Hugo Almeida and Hélder Postiga are the wrong side of 30 and I haven’t seen a whole lot from them previous World Cups to suggest they will trouble many defences this time around.

Germany 4 Portugal 0 Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 So it all lies on Portugal’s key player and inspirational captain Cristiano Ronaldo. He has had an amazing season, winning the Champions League, outscoring his nemesis Messi, and finishing the season scoring 31 goals from 30 games, sharing the European Golden Shoe with Liverpool striker Luis Suárez. What else can you say about that? Amazing season from an amazing player.  He really has developed into one of the best player ever, as his all round game has also improved in the last few years. With Ronaldo in such sizzling form, Portugal will always have a chance against any team.

In group G Portugal have got one of the harder groups. Against Germany in the first game, Portugal will have to be at their very best. These kind of games are always tight and cagey. I predict a score draw.

A more detailed review on Germany here and on Portugal here

Germany 4 Portugal 0 Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 Well lets get right to it then. The sending off. One word for me. SHAME. Muller could have scored ten goals but it wouldn’t have mattered as all we will remember is his Rivaldoesque dive. I hate seeing players trying to get other professionals sent off, its a cancer of the game I love so much, but FIFA never seem to care. The sight of the German bench celebrating the sending off was also shameful, have they got no f-ing pride! SHAME

Germany 4 Portugal 0 Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 Now Pepe was a silly boy, but in the heat of the moment he really didn’t do a whole lot wrong. A yellow was what he should have got for showing anger at Muller’s theatrics. Its not like Pepe doesn’t love the odd roll along the grass himself, the fool. But it wasn’t a headbutt as I have seen reported, it was mild, and the authorities have to step back and let the men on the pitch sort it out, eh like men! Want an example, take Jermaine Jones in the USA game where he calmed the situation right down after a heavy collision with a Muntari who wanted to strangle him, he even had his arms on his neck. Jones relaxed the angry Ghanaian right down, shook hands and got on with the game. What would Muller have done? Its all about pride in oneself, and respect for the game and your opponent. SHAME And the German bench jumping around giving high fives after the red card, SHAME. Have some pride.

Anyway to the game. Ronaldo tried but its hard when it a one man team. Everything went through him, even if other players were in better positions. Arrogance? No, its a reality, the other Portuguese players are not as good, you have to get it to Ronaldo has fast as possible. Good try Ronnie but Germany were just too good this time round. One nil to Messi so far.

The second half was ruined by the sending off, game pretty much unwatchable as the contest was over early. With that I thought Low should have brought on Klose for the goal scoring record and give the striker some game time. Why bring him if you wont play him, tut tut no class from Low, as usual. The fans would have at least got some enjoyment in the last 20 minutes seeing Klose try his best for a goal.

Anyone else notice how every time the camera pans to Ronaldo he has a sneaky look up at the stadium screen. “Yeah, still looking good baby”

And Viera on ITV saying diving and cheating is part of our game and its acceptable. Not part of the game I used to play. Two words Patrick, F. O.

Will have calmed down by the weekend! SHAME!

Argentina V Bosnia and Herzegovina Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014

PreGame:

Argentina Quite a good few of the pundits and experts are tipping Argentina this year for the World Cup. With Messi and Agüero on board, a South American world cup, and a relatively easy path to the semi’s predicted, its really not hard to see why Argentina are second favourites, after Brazil.

Group F should be a doddle for Argentina. Can’t see them having much difficulty in dispatching Bosnia, Iran and Nigeria.

Argentina V Bosnia and Herzegovina Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014Double mark Messi and cut out the threat? He has had a relatively bad season with Barcelona. Relatively speaking since scoring 28 league goals isn’t bad, but arch rivals Ronaldo and Real Madrid stole the headlines this year. Alejandro Sabella has made him Captain, which is amazingly foolish. Thanks coach for putting more pressure on my back! The problem here is, Messi has the weight of a nation on his shoulders. We will see tonight how he copes with this pressure.

Bosnia and Hertz: Don’t know a whole lot about Bosnia and Hertz I am afraid. But I do know playing Argentina first up they better be good or they will get a quick harsh introduction to world cup football.

Argentina V Bosnia and Herzegovina Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014Their squad have few standout names, but they do seem to have a lot of players plying their trade in the big leagues of Europe. Edin Džeko is the key man, a player we are all very familiar with after his few seasons with Manchester City. He can score goals, and in this group that could be the key.  In fact in qualifying Bosnia scored 30 goals. That’s a strike rate to frighten any defence.

But having said all that, they qualified from a very easy qualification group, just ahead of Greece, Slovakia, Lithuania Latvia, and Liechtenstein. So they have never really got a true test.

Lets see how they do tonight, could go with way to be perfectly honest.

A more detailed review on Argentina here and on Bosnia here

Bosnia were a tough team for Argentina to get first up. They were hard to break down and for long periods it was Bosnia that looked the slightly better team in this game, without doing a whole lot either.

The first half was a snoozefest, nothing to note at all. Messi was getting a lot of criticism from the idiots on BBC. Again I keep saying it, its a different system with Barca. With Argentina he plays much deeper, with forwards that are not as accommodating as what he plays alongside at the Camp Nou. So he always has to overachieve with his national team. A lot of pressure was answered with a classic goal.

Otherwise thought the Argentina goalkeeper, Romero, had some impressive moments, apart from the odd clanger or two.

Bosnia good unit without anyone in particular catching the eye.

Up next, Argentina have to play Iran, a chance to rest a few players. Also could give Messi the full game to get more goals, and shut up more of his critics.

Bosnia are against Nigeria, and going by what I saw yesterday they also shouldn’t have too much trouble beating the African team.

France V Honduras Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazil

PreGame:

France, the great pretenders, what can you say. They can be very frustrating to watch at times, seemingly not caring enough to work the yards to win a game. But they definitely have some awesome talent in the squad.

France V Honduras Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazil Hugo Lloris, the captain, is an exceptionally gifted keeper who well marshals his defence. A defence with Evra bombing forward all the time, Pogba getting his foot about and harrying in midfield, with an all star forward line of either Giroud or Benzema ready to pounce. They haven’t a bad team at all the French. But can they be bothered enough? How many times has this French team disappointed? They really have never replaced Zidane. They need a midfield general to direct attacks and get the team moving along, someone who inspires and leads by example. They need a leader on the pitch, but they dont have one, and they wont be winning any world cup this time around.

key players for me will be Benzema. Now that Ribery is missing he has a lot more pressure to shoulder. Can he do it? Not sure, but against Honduras he should at least get a good few chances to score.

Honduras for me were the worst team in the last world cup. They appeared lethargic and it seemed they had no idea what they were meant to be doing on the pitch. So imagine my surprise when I see they have only gone and qualified for another world cup. Well done to the manager, Luis Fernando Suárez on that front.

France V Honduras Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazil It’s not that they don’t have some talent in their squad, they do. Wilson Palacios is one of their key players, a player who has donned the shirts of a few English clubs at this stage. Quick and a good passer, on his day he can cause problems.

But the overall depth of the squad is short, and I don’t think they will France too many problems.

A more detailed review on France here and on Honduras here

Honduras were fairly rough in this game, lucky to escape with just the one red. Had no chance once their key player Palacios went off, for two silly yellow cards.

Not really a whole lot to say as France did exactly what I expected, put Honduras to the sword fairly easy without too much trouble. Some have said it was a brilliant performance, but I wouldnt go that far as Honduras a very poor team. Would like to see how France get on against a well drilled defence. Maybe Switzerland will give them a better test?

Benzema stepped up to take charge of the forward line,  in the absences or Ribery, and did well. He is off the mark now and should get a goal or two in the next few games.

Honduras have to play Ecuador and that essentially is their world cup. If they win I guess they can hope on a draw against Switzerland.

Ecuador V Switzerland Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014

PreGame:

Switzerland are a solid rigid team, that plays exactly to form.  You know that the Swiss are not going to let in many goals, will go about their work quietly, and, on their day, can beat any of the top teams, including Brazil as they have done a few months ago.

The Swiss really should have no problem disposing of Ecuador today. But having said that, Switzerland did beat Spain and drew with a very poor Honduras team in the last world up resulting in a first round elimination, so one can never tell with this team.Ecuador V Switzerland Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014

A key plus for the Swiss is their manager, Ottmar Hitzfeld. Born near the Swiss border, In Germany, the wily old manager is a dab hand at getting the best out of a limited team. He has made the Swiss team a very solid unit and difficult to break down.

As for the players, nothing exciting stands out, but they do have a lot of decent players who on their day can turn a game. From Xherdan Shaqiri, and Gökhan Inler  in the forward line ready to pounce, with Gelson Fernandes sweeping up any loose balls, a defence marshaled by Philippe Senderos, all with one of the best goalkeepers in Europe Diego Benaglio between the sticks, its a good squad. Not exciting but not too shoddy of a team either.

Ecuador how did you qualify again? Was it Quito and the altitude? Ecuador didn’t win any of their qualfying games that were outside of their home nation! Do not know a whole lot about your squad, but you did impress in your last world cup appearance in 2006, shocking everyone to qualify for the second round.

Ecuador V Switzerland Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 Squad looks a little weak, with only a handful of players plying their trade in Europe. One name that does shine out though is Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia, the captain of the team. Fast and an inspiring captain for his country, Valencia must be looking forward to this world cup. At 28 he is at the peak of his footballing career, and with Ecuador in a very manageable group, he could help Ecuador get into the second round once again.

Against Switzerland, Ecuador will have to try and beat a team that doesn’t let in many goals. How will they be able to break down this rigid well set up team. Do they have the skills in midfield to open up the Swiss defence? I cant see that unfortunately.

One good stat for Ecuador is that Switzerland have never beaten South American opposition in five attempts at the World Cup, losing the last four, albeit this will first world cup meeting between the two today.

A more detailed review on Ecuador here and on Switzerland here

First question I have to ask is, whats with all the stupid haircuts on the Swiss team, They should spend more time on the training pitch rather than preening themselves, tut tut. Would love to know how long does Behrami take to do his hair?

Switzerland definitely used their get out of jail card in this game, with their late goal. Was fun all the same.

Over all though I thought they laboured, and struggled to mount any decent attack, especially in the first half.

Stocker, particularly, was awful in the first half, couldnt get in any crosses at all. Drmic who? Drmic went missing in the first half, never seen him all game.

So taken all that into account one must give Ottmar Hitzfeldt a huge amount of credit. He took off Stoker and Drmic and the two subs he brought on scored the goals and changed the game. He also changed the system to be more attacking. That’s how you manage a team, well done Ottmar.

Behrami lost the ball about a million times, very frustrating to watch but he did totally redeem himself for the winning goal. Not only did he do a last ditch tackle to prevent Ecuador taking the lead, but his persistence and cleverness in getting up quickly from the tackle resulted in the winning goal for the Swiss. All is forgiven Behrami

Hats off to the ref for letting play go, well done to that.

Whats the problem with the defender Lichtsteiner, he is a bit moany, constantly arguing about the inches that Ecuador kept gaining from free kicks. Calm down you angry young man, jeez.

Ecuador were there for the taking so the win is not a shock, but boy did it take a long time for Switzerland to get their act together. But a win is a win is a win.

Small mention to Rodriguez who was pretty good at going forward for the Swiss, and had a decent game throughout.

Ecuador were a little unlucky but they seriously dipped in the second half.

Up next for the Swiss is the French, a game where they will definitely have to up their performance if they want to get a result.

Ecuador have to play Honduras, a game that is a must win for them, but they should do with ease.

PreGame:

Uruguay have a good team. We saw that in the last world cup.

But how bad is Suarez’s niggling injury. He will miss the first game against Costa Rica and its still not officially confirmed if he will start against England. You would imagine Uruguay without Suarez can still beat Costa Rica

Their midfield is relatively strong and once again the reliable Diego Lugano comes back to captain his team from defence.

costa ricaCosta Rica: One could feel for Costa Rica, an average team unfortunately lumped in with three heavy weights of world football, Italy, Uruguay and, eh, England. In another group they might have a chance of a win against another bottom feeder team, but in this group no way. I would be honestly surprised if Costa Rica manage to score more than one goal in the three games.

Nothing stands out in their squad, and although they did well to qualify in second place in the Concacaf qualifying, ahead of Mexico, I think they will be heading home early. A first round exit.

A more detailed review on Costa Rica here and on Uruguay here

An excellent performance from Costa Rica. The same could not be said for their opponents. Uruguay looked very laboured, and made awful hard work of moving the ball forward. Forlan was rubbish, and hadn’t a sniff of a goal.

Uruguay V Costa Rica Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 And as for the captain, Lugano, he was a terrible liability in the centre of defence. He could not defend anything, and I would be surprised if Tabarez sticks with him for the next game, even if he is captain and has a big reputation. Surely someone on the bench couldn’t play as bad?

Was very interesting to see that Uruguay didn’t do as much diving in the second half, funny that!

costa ricaCosta Rica were well worth their victory and all three goals were great. Man of the match for me was Joel Campbell, who once again shows the footballing world his long range striking abilities. Wonder what club will snap him up in the autumn transfer window. But his all round game was good too, excellent harrowing and tracking back, good mazy runs, good support play, all round top performance. Brilliant.

Uruguay now go on to play England in what will be a real humdinger of a match, loser goes out of the world cup, while Costa Rica can now take the Italy game with a little more leg room, maybe set up for a draw. This result today was very interesting.

Colombia V Greece Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazil 2014

PreGame:

Greece are a well coached team who play to the best of their strengths. Even though they are a relatively old squad, that can count for invaluable experience, they know each others game plan inside out. You cant train that, its competitive experience that should make them do well again. They are also lucky enough to be in a relatively easy enough group and have the experience and know how to get out of this group without too much bother, or at least they should do.

Colombia V Greece Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazil 2014Key man is Giorgos Samaras who seems to spend more time on the ground than he does off it, but he is a brilliant player at holding the ball up and a great target man. Dismiss him at your peril. He might not score more than he should but his teammates definitely feed off his delicate passes.

Colombia are a team that always entertains and always make the headlines both on and off the field. But I think they will struggle badly. With the striker Radamel Falcao of Monaco out injured, I just cant see any goals in this team. Who else will score the goals? That and a lack of experience in top international football is what will hurt them.

if they have a chance its that Colombia is so close to Brazil so for adapting to the climate and the conditions that’s a huge bonus for this team. And they did come second in South American qualifying, so maybe I am too hard on them? But have they played a team as clever as Greece in South America or as physically daunting as Ivory Coast? I dont think so. Sorry Colombia, I dont think you will get out of the group, but hell at least its a short journey home.

Read a more detailed review on Colombia here and on Greece here

Was very disappointed with Greece in this game. No real passion, drive or skill shown from the team. They were also a bit clueless going forward. For one of Europe’s best defences to ship three goals was a bit of a shock. One example from the game was when a defender had two team players right beside him, yet flicked the ball up to himself and promptly lost it. I had no idea what he was trying to do, but that kind of rubbish was too regular in the Greek defence, silly mindless stuff. It also seemed that their sole attacking formula involved running to the penalty box with the ball and taking a dive. No effort to shoot just fall.Pathetic.

But don’t Greece always lose the first game? I still expect them to come out of this tight group, but they would need a huge improvement in the next game against Japan.

colombiaAs for Colombia they were great in the first half and wilted a bit in the early second, but thoroughly deserved to win the game, well done. Will be very interesting to see how they get on against the Ivory Coast.

Also must mention the 12th man in the game, the Colombian fans were brilliant and definitely gave a huge lift to their team. Take a bow Colombian fans.

PreGame:

Ivory Coast: With a relatively easy group this could be the time for the Ivory Coast to put on a show in this years World Cup. I feel they have enough in their squad to overcome both Colombia and Japan

For me its all about the physical strength of this team, They will have some strong physically demanding players who get the ball and power through defenses. Think of Drogba. Think of the Toure Brothers. Think of Gervinho.

Not only have we this power but this team also has a lot of international experience and players who have played in the world cup before.

Ivory Coast V Japan Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazilkey player for me and a somewhat very underrated player is Serey Die. Another very physical player he rarely loses the ball and can show off some skill when required. I am sure not much will get past this African version of Roy Keane.

So I predict that the Ivory Coast will steamroll out of this group

Japan, Asian champions and first nation to qualify for the World Cup, are great at passing and running, but not a huge amount of overall quality in their squad

Ivory Coast V Japan Fifa World Cup 2014 BrazilHonda is back for another run out in the world stage. he really is the linchpin of this team, the link where everything happens, and can chip in for a good goal as well. If he clicks then Japan clicks. But he had an out of sorts season with Milan and really needs to get back on track soon.

Ivory Coast might out muscle them in a bruising encounter, which I think they will lose.

Read a more detailed review on Japan here and on Ivory Coast here

Game was a little disappointing. Japan great in the first half but wilted in the second.

Ivory Coast V Japan Fifa World Cup 2014 BrazilJapan are a well coached team, and great on the counter attack, moving forward with great speed, but maybe in the heat of Brazil it is a hard game to play. Honda, the heart beat of the team, scored a cracking goal, and Japan were a little unfortunate to at least not take a point from this game.

Ivory Coast V Japan Fifa World Cup 2014 BrazilIvory Coast, like Cameroon, seem to have employed a bit of a buffoon, another European coach who cant get work in Europe. I know Drogba has a niggly injury but to wait until the 62 minute to bring him was ridiculous. He is lucky it worked out in the end, because it was obvious that even a half fit Drogba is better than the attack that IC started with. When Drogba came on he lifted the whole team and its no surprise that IC scored two minutes later.

Aurier had a decent game, and was my man of the match, his two crosses resulted in two goals and his forward play caused Japan problems all day long.

Next up for japan is a wounded Greek team in what will be an interesting game of contrasts. Ivory Coast have to look forward to playing Colombia, a game where there is no clear favourite. This group is still hard to call in my opinion, and I would still fancy Greece to come out of it, with the IC.
